Love Rant #2

What can you do?
when love cripples you...
Who can you love?
When you don't love you...
Love is like dust
It's everywhere, it's in the air
not always clear.
If it builds up
it makes you sick...
then you gotta get rid of it!
That's what you gotta do
when love cripples you
throw that junk out
like a too small shoe.

One love to the Liberator mag and Live From Planet Earth!

Love always...Alek

Cosmically Fierce!!!!!!

A Poet and her camera circa 1998

when I was 15, me and my cousin would take trips to Tijuana to by cheap GUESS? and faux Cartier watches. I never liked to take pictures of "locals" but the photographer in me can't help it. I just took a few quick shots, then commenced to parlay.

Most days, I found myself snapping pictures on Crenshaw...the prefered hang out strip of my youth. Lemeirt Park/ Barbershop Row. It was a great way for me to talk to all the cuties who lined the streets. 15 years old, no shame, just hormones and wonder. Looking back, it helped me get over my shyness. :)

This one got published in an L.A. Times anthology that same year.

Another restless night...

You know, sometimes I have so much energy, I don't know what to do...What to write... when I have not much to say. Or is it that I have too much to say and lack the patience to write it down...When all else fails. Color!

The Breakup (cuz some days these city lights is too much)

To be honest, I've simply fallen out of love with you. I remember how things used to be... I was in awe of your greatness. Thought no one was better than you. Gave up my own home to make a home with you. But you never treated me right. You never loved me, though you taught me so much. You are so cold...and then so hot. I never really get to enjoy you like I should. I believed, once, in the dream of you. But I have woke up now! And even though, you are spewing with clubs that offer free liquor, i'm feeling like, I can't drink like that forever... Is this really all that your'e about? So shallow, yet so overwhelming, like a faux homie, you are so overratted, with your high rent prices, tiny apartments that we share with mice, unattentive landlords. I just can't take it anymore, so i'm leaving. Not sure if i'm coming back. I need the sun, heat, some time in the mountains and at the beach. I need my roots right now, not your brick walls and stinky bummy trains. So consider this, our first official split, where you and all that you are made of, are out of sight, and out of mind.

Jay Z and Nubian Faces!

Daaaaaaang Jay! I ain't know you was on that York ish.

Master P Leads the Way!!!!

I don't know if any of you have been following the movements of Master P in the last few years, but he is doing his best to heal the wounds that the world and black culture has sustained from negative images that he admits that he helped to create and promote. I remember not to long ago watching the congressional hearing on hip hop (yes, there was a congressional hearing on hip hop and all its ills) and seeing Master P along with David Banner and Micheal Eric Dyson exchange in a dialouge about the importance and influence of hip hop was beyond amazing. David Banner basically upheld the "It's just a song, I gotta feed my Daughter" mantra. Dyson played the safe "It's expression, it's a voice" thing (When will the academy learn to keep it real? and if it is about a creative voice what about the other creative voices in Black America/the world/music?) but good old Master P basically said that now that he is older and has a son, has seen loved ones murdured, and has seen the influence that hip hop has on peoples lives. He see's how his image was traced in hoods world over and he didn't like what he was seeing. He therefore, decided to dedicate his life to Change and the Upliftment of the hood. When the hood is lifted, everyone is lifted. Just like when the hood is down, everyone is down. Master P's latest venture is a cable network called Better Black Television!!! I hope he reaches out to some of the thousands of great positive hip hoppers and media makers to move this forward and makes the people say something more meaningful than UUUUUUGGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!

Miriam Makeba Ashe'

"There was a slight error, which I do not think you will mind my calling attention to. It concerns my African name. I would like to spell it correctly for you:

Zenzile Makeba Qgwashu Nguvama Yiketheli Nxgowa Bantana Baloma Xa Ufun Ubaphekeli, Mbiza Yotshawala Sithi Xa Saku Qgiba Ukhutja Sithathe Izitsha Sizi Khabe Singama Lawu Singama Qgwashu Singama Nqamla Nqgithi.

The reason for its length is that every child takes the first name of all his male ancestors. Often following the first name is a descriptive word or two, telling about the character of the person, making the true African name somewhat like a story."

-Miriam Makeba

Thank you Miriam for singing "Malaika, Nakupenda Malaika" and inspiring my mother to name me a name that calls out to the ancestors with each breath!

More Video from Ghana!!!

I had the phenomenal opportunity to take part in the inagural Pan African Literary Forum in Ghana, West Africa. I went as the June Jordan Scholar in Poetry and spent a week workshopping poems with Pulitzer Prize winning poet Yousef Kumanyakaa! The experience was super dope!!!! I got to build on the literary tradition with writers from all over the world including, Tyhemba Jess, author of Leadbelly(he took that gangsta photo of me too), Patricia Jabbeh Welsely, Niq Mihlongo of S. Africa, and Binyavanga of Kenya and many more, too many to name! All that I can say is that I learned a lot a lot a lot and loved every moment of being in Ghana again, since it is my second home town after living there for about a year and change in the early part of the century!!!!I even got to rock a show with Grand Master Massese of Kenya! Talk about superdope Pan African Collabo!!!! Then, I took some time away from the writers and hooked up with long time homegirl, Ghanain rock star AB! We recorded a tune at the Asasease studio in Dansoman! I took some video and might one day post more!!! Njoy!
Yes I do love Africa!!!!! Yes I love Ghana!!!! regardless of those cheating ass taxi drivers!!!

Cosmic Headphone Love!!!!

The album isn't out just yet...look for it late summer, early fallish. The original release date was supposed to be April, so the good people at Theme magazine gave a great review! Love is good!
Here's what it says: "Brooklyn's Eagle Nebula brings to the world her debut album "Cosmic Headphones, a musical collection of high creative tastes produced by Georgia Anne Muldrow and executive produced by Dudley Perkins (of Stones Throw fame). Her throwback delivery and playful lyrics immediately brought back memories of a time when true hip hop was king. Witty and intelligent, Eagle playfully rhymes about living with optimism in "Daily Debut" but can switch gears to the personally contemplative "What I Like" without skipping a beat. Her message is positive and inspirational without coming off as tacky or preachy. "Cosmic Headphones" is a fresh breath of air in a rap game that is currently polluted with ringtone singles and recycled cliches as an excuse for lyrical content. Do yourself a favor and see what the new wave of hip hop sounds like."

Eagle Nebula in Trace magazine

The folks at Trace had nice things to say: "Bringing the fun back into hip hop, Eagle Nebula challenges the scene to reminisce on days when freestyle sessions were like medicine and the street was a breeding ground for the modern-day renaissance. On her latest EP, "Cosmic Headphones", she begs you to enter her mind and spirit on a journey from Inglewood, Calf. to Brooklyn, NY as she morphs into a mic goddess, passion on her tongue. Using rhyme styles and voice play that has her compared stylistically to mighty KRS-One, this EP serves as an introduction to Eagle's many layers. Cosmic Headphones will be released on the ePistrophik Peach Sound label (founded by soul-hip-hop veterans Georgia Anne Muldrow and Dudley Perkins)."

The Lunar Eclipse of Feb. 20, 2008

Better late than never! I camped out on my roof that night to watch the eclipse and bathe in the moon beams! Here are a few pics!

Here's a bit of what it means , courtesy of our friends at aquariuspapers.com

This Eclipse will create a lot of confusion calling us to create order out of chaos. This can help us all of glimpse our place in the larger universal order, separating and uniting as is appropriate to our unique circumstances. With the emphasis on the stellium in Aquarius, we can find friends and a group work in an appropriate alignment with our better nature, so put yourself and your skills out there on behalf of a greater altruism.
Of major significance is the Moon conjunct Saturn, fusing our feelings with our purpose, helping us get clear about the limits of what we are and aren't supposed to be doing. Saturn shows a need to demonstrate expertise and "grab the brass ring," this supported by Uranus prodding us to put ourselves out there as well. Saturn is retrograde, leading us inward on a journey to wisdom through the experiences shown by this eclipse.
As I've mentioned before, perhaps the most important factor in this eclipse is the Moon occupying the same degree as Saturn's direct station on May 2-3, 2008. Much has been written about this degree, which we are told is one of "Liberating Ordeals." It is a degree of self assurance in asserting what we believe is important, and we are told we could "dominate our environment" through some form of individual Self-realization. There may be struggles, but there will also be rewards and recognition.

We should all find useful forms of efficient, practical, specialized material expression, something we can sustain and can sustain us. Be sensitive to accelerating your training to manifest your particular form of practical discipleship. This begins a 50 month process of being liberated into a greater effectiveness that can benefit our world. Obviously this will take place in stages at key times, and it began at the Eclipse ushering in the Full Moon effect influencing the next two weeks.

This eclipse will be in effect until 2012! Take the time and follow your spirit!!!!

It's not that I technically like snow. It's just that I was getting worried, because it is supposed to snow in Winter and it just wasn't happening. I actually thought that it wasn't going to snow this year at all, i'm glad the earth ain't waving the white flag just yet. Anyway, I decided to celebrate by tossing some snowballs around the park.
